EndNote X8.1 for Windows and Mac have been released. This message is similar to an earlier message sent 25-07-2017. The EndNote X8 Windows and Mac installers are available for you at our Download portal and have been updated. How to obtain EndNote X8.1 Windows
For your end users
- Once they start EndNote X8 Windows, they will see a popup screen. Following the popup screen instructions will update EndNote to version X8.1 Windows. This will be the route if you have not disabled the popup screen and if you have allowed end user update installations.
- The end user may also choose 'Help > Check for Updates...' via the menu. This will be the route if you have allowed end user update installations.
If your end users have a licensed version, both options will not require any product key entry.
For you as the EndNote application manager
- Download the files via our download portal. Follow the route as described below for the EndNote X8 Windows version. Replace the msi file with the newly downloaded msi installer and distribute the installer or roll out the installation.
- For your convenience we are also offering the 'EndNote X8.1 MSP Patch Update' to bulk update your end user EndNote X8.0, X8.0.1, X8.0.2 versions in one run.

For your end users

Special instructions and download link for EndNote X8.1 Mac end user
Since OS X 10.12 Sierra is more strict than the previous OS X versions (Gatekeeper), we have decided to prepare your EndNote X8 Mac branded end user installer upfront. You don't have to implement any modifications to this installer. Download the file and make it available to your end users without any handling. Although the unique url hasn't been changed, the resulting 'pre branded' download will yield you the newest EndNote X8.1 Mac for your end users.

Default instructions and download links EndNote X8.1 Mac & Windows
Within a few minutes you will receive an email message from info@esdnow.com containing an user name and a password. If you don’t receive an email, this usually means that you have received a password in the past. You may reset your password via https://sso.esdnow.com/portal or change your password after login via 'Settings > Change password'. If you would like to add other management / IT email addresses to the list, please let us know.
- Go to https://sso.esdnow.com/portal
- Log in with the per email received credentials.
- Click on menu item 'Files'. Click label X8 once at the top. With the selection labels at the top you may narrow your selection (e.g., click once X8) or broaden your selection (e.g., click X8 once again).
- Now you will see Names, Download links, Serial Number and Product key license details.
Optional: All licensed users may create a free EndNote Online account [EndNote X8 > Edit > Preferences > Sync]. One may also download and use EndNote for iPad app from the Apple App store.
EndNote X8.1 Mac IT ADMINISTRATOR Site License Distribution

This EndNote X8.1 Mac file can be used for individual installations. Just open or double click the file. Follow the instructions on screen. The one-by-one setup requires manual entry of the product key!
EndNote X8.1 Windows Site License Distribution (msi, zip, incl. admin.bat)
File name: ENX8Inst.zip
The 'EndNote X8 Windows Site License Distribution' file requires special handling before distribution to the end user clients. The preparation of end user installers will take appr. 10-15 minutes of your time. For detailed instructions please see the PDF documentation (e.g., ‘English EndNote X8 Windows Site License Installation instructions’).
Best practice:
- Log in at https://sso.esdnow.com/portal and go to ‘Files’.
- Click on the label X8 at the top of the page.
- Write down or copy/paste your product key (see also top of this email). To avoid illegal distribution, please do not give this product key to your end users.
- Download the zip file ‘EndNote X8 Windows Site License Distribution (msi, zip, incl. admin.bat)’.
- Extract/unzip this file to another folder (e.g., EndNote Site license user installer).
- Go to the folder where the extracted files reside (e.g., EndNote Site license user installer) via Windows Explorer or via the command prompt (DOS screen).
- Double click or run ‘admin.bat’.
- Now you will be prompted in the screen to enter details while creating the end user installer and license file. The item 'Perform administrative installation' should stay unchecked. The setup will ask your Organization name and product key. Organization name details will be incorporated into the end user client installer, therefore, please also use your SL number <<SL No EndNote>> (useful for support requests and handling), e.g. <<Preferred Organization Name>>.
- You will be asked to enter a target folder (e.g., EndNote client installer) where the end user client installer and branded license file (‘License.dat’) will be generated and stored.
- After finishing the wizard please browse to the target folder (e.g., EndNote client installer) where you will find the new client installer msi and a ‘license.dat’ file. The content of this folder can be used for client setup and distribution or for individual installations.
