As you may be aware, Apple has released macOS Catalina this fall. Apple has made the decision to drop all 32-bit application support with this release, which will impact EndNote.

EndNote X9 for macOS Customers
EndNote X9 for macOS has been updated for compatibility with Catalina. If you already have EndNote X9, please install all updates as they become available to avoid interruption in your workflow.
EndNote X9.3.2 for macOS 10.15 Catalina has been released. The EndNote X9 Mac installer is available for you at our Download portal and has been updated. macOS 10.15 Catalina has significant impact on various hardware and software. We highly recommend all our end users to choose the right time to switch to macOS Catalina and consequently to EndNote X9.3.2 for Mac. We have created a FAQ item for the update from EndNote X9.2 and earlier to the macOS Catalina compatible version of EndNote X9.3 and higher.
EndNote X9 for Windows Customers
The EndNote developers begun working on the future X9.3 Windows update to restore cross-platform compatibility between Mac and Windows. We will update you on the Windows release later this year. Customers working on both Mac and Windows platforms are encouraged to continue working on both platforms. Best is to use EndNote Online as the 'Sync' platform to keep both the Windows X9.2 and Mac X9.3.2 data up to date and in sync.

What's new in EndNote version X9.3.2
The EndNote X9.3.2 Mac (Bld: 15235) update contains:
- Compatible with macOS Catalina
- New database engine to comply with Apple’s 64-bit compatibility requirements
NOTE: When you open an existing library in X9.3 and later for Mac, it will create a converted version for use with this new database engine. The original library will not be changed, so you can continue using it with X9.2 or earlier. Alternatively, use Sync to move your data across systems and versions.

- Unicode support updated and modernized
- Other improvements and bug fixes
- Resolved an issue with the software updater (fixed in X9.3.1)
- Resolved issues converting certain libraries from previous versions (fixed in X9.3.2)
- Corrected issue with the Insert Citation window occasionally appearing blank in Microsoft Word 2019/365 (fixed in X9.3.2)
- Resolved stability issues with Microsoft Word 2008/2011 (fixed in X9.3.2)

If you have authorized your end users to download and install updates then they may initiate the update via the popup screen when they start EndNote X9 or they might initiate the update via the menu 'EndNote X9 > Check for Updates…'.

Within a few minutes you will receive an email message from info@esdnow.com containing an user name and a password. If you don’t receive an email, this usually means that you have received a password in the past. You may reset your password via https://sso.esdnow.com/portal or change your password after login via 'Settings > Change password'. If you would like to add other management / IT email addresses to the list, please let us know.
- Go to https://sso.esdnow.com/portal
- Log in with the per email received credentials.
- Click on menu item 'Files'. Click label X9 once at the top. With the selection labels at the top you may narrow your selection (e.g., click once X9) or broaden your selection (e.g., click X9 once again).
- Now you will see Names, Download links, Serial Number and Product key license details.
Optional: All licensed users may create a free EndNote Online account [EndNote X9 > Edit > Preferences > Sync]. One may also download and use EndNote for iPhone and iPad app from the Apple App store.
EndNote X9 Mac IT ADMINISTRATOR Site License Distribution

This EndNote X9 Mac file can be used for individual installations. Just open or double click the file. Follow the instructions on screen. The one-by-one setup requires manual entry of the product key! For mass distribution to your Mac end users, please use the above EndNote X9 Mac END USER PRE-BRANDED Site License Distribution.

The 'EndNote X9 Windows Site License Distribution' file requires special handling before distribution to the end user clients. The preparation of end user installers will take appr. 10-15 minutes of your time. For detailed instructions please see the PDF documentation (e.g., ‘English EndNote X9 Windows Site License Installation instructions’).
Best practice:
- Log in at https://sso.esdnow.com/portal and go to ‘Files’.
- Click on the label X9 at the top of the page.
- Write down or copy/paste your product key (see also top of this email). To avoid illegal distribution, please do not give this product key to your end users.
- Download the zip file ‘EndNote X9 Windows Site License Distribution (msi, zip, incl. admin.bat)’.
- Extract/unzip this file to another folder (e.g., EndNote Site license user installer).
- Go to the folder where the extracted files reside (e.g., EndNote Site license user installer) via Windows Explorer or via the command prompt (DOS screen).
- Double click or run ‘admin.bat’.
- Now you will be prompted in the screen to enter details while creating the end user installer and license file. The item 'Perform administrative installation' should stay unchecked. The setup will ask your Organization name and product key. Organization name details will be incorporated into the end user client installer, therefore, please also use your SL number (useful for support requests and handling).
- You will be asked to enter a target folder (e.g., EndNote client installer) where the end user client installer and branded license file (‘License.dat’) will be generated and stored.
- After finishing the wizard please browse to the target folder (e.g., EndNote client installer) where you will find the new client installer msi and a ‘license.dat’ file. The content of this folder can be used for client setup and distribution or for individual installations.
- Bulk patch update existing EndNote X9 installations with 'EndNote X9.2 Windows MSP Patch Update Site License for existing installations X9.0 or X9.1'.
